What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a test to prove English language skills that is recognised worldwide. The IELTS test is also one of the most widely used English tests in the world.
The IELTS tests both British and American English. The test is administered by Cambridge University, the British Council and IPD Education Australia and therefore also receives wide acceptance.

Do I necessarily have to provide proof of an IELTS test at a German university?
No—in fact, proof of the IELTS certificate is not compulsory. The aim of the IELTS is to prove your English language skills. If the university also accepts another language certificate, such as the TOEFL, a stay in an English-speaking country, an interview at the university or a certain number of points on Duolingo, you can submit on if these proofs instead of an IELTS certificate.
Ultimately, of course, it depends on the respective university - so check with the respective university before you apply to find out which language certificates are accepted.
What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL?
The TOEFL test stands for Test of English as a foreign Language. This test is a standardised and internationally recognised European language certificate. It measures your academic English skills.
The TOEFL also consists of four parts—reading, listening, speaking and writing. It is also similar to the IELTS test, but differs in some ways. For example, the TOEFL test is oriented towards American English and differs precisely in the test structure, as well as the acceptance.
