The Hans Böckler Foundation provides annual scholarships to international doctoral candidates from all around the world, with a focus on those from the Global South, who wish to combine their research with a stay in Germany. The scholarships support research linked to the world of work and are awarded on behalf of the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB). Various scholarships are available, for example:
- Dieter Schumacher International PhD-Scholarship: The Hans Böckler Foundation's Dieter Schumacher International PhD Scholarship provides exceptional international Economics PhD students with an opportunity to conduct a 12-24 month research stay at a German university or research institute. The scholarship is available to doctoral students who are under 30 years of age.
- Ute and György Széll International PhD-Scholarship: The Ute and György Széll International Scholarship provides exceptional international PhD students in Social Sciences and Humanities with a six-month research stay at a German university, research institute, foundation or archive, regardless of age limitations.

Depending on the scholarship programme, the requirements may vary. However, these are some of the criteria you need to fulfill:
Dieter Schumacher International PhD-Scholarship:
To apply for this scholarship, you will need to submit a 3-page description of your doctoral project, a 3-page research paper outlining the topic, questions, methodology and goals of your research in Germany, an invitation letter from your host PhD supervisor in Germany, a letter of recommendation from your PhD supervisor at your home institution, your CV in table form, your Diploma that entitles you to pursue a doctorate, and the application form which can be downloaded from the website.
Ute and György Széll International PhD-Scholarship:
To apply for the scholarship, you must be enrolled in a PhD program in Social Sciences or Humanities. You will also need to submit a 3-page research plan describing your doctoral project and its relevance to your career development, a 3-page research paper outlining the topic, questions, methodology and goals of your research in Germany, an invitation letter from your host PhD supervisor in Germany, an assessment by the PhD supervisor at your home institution, your CV in table form, and your Diploma that qualifies you to pursue a doctorate.
