A dual study programme in business informatics offers students various opportunities to specialise according to their own interests. One of these selectable specialisations is IT consulting. This essentially involves consulting services in the IT sector.
The programme at the FHDW leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree after three years. Since it is a dual study programme, it is characterised by a high degree of practical orientation. During the course of study, three months of theory at the university alternate with three months of practice in a company.
IT processes are important for almost all small and large companies. When expert knowledge is required for certain tasks, IT consultants are hired. Examples of projects are the introduction of new software or a cloud solution. Due to the variety of possible tasks, IT consultants specialise in certain areas during their professional practice. The everyday work of an IT consultant always poses new challenges. This is because the assignment of a classic IT consultant takes place at various customers.
The degree programme prepares students for this professional perspective. Students learn the basics of business administration and information technology as well as methods that are used in IT consulting. In addition to IT knowledge, business management knowledge is necessary because cost aspects and other business management contexts also play a role in every consulting project.

FHDW is “Top Digital Education Provider”
The market research institute ServiceValue examined the user satisfaction of digital education providers for the magazine Wirtschaftswoche. The FHDW received a grade of 2.50 – only 0.08 grade points behind the first-place finisher in the business school category. For this, the FHDW was awarded the “Top Digital Education Provider” seal in November 2020.
In various categories, users of 115 providers gave school grades for the quality of the education provided online. A total of 10,750 evaluations were collected.
Institutional accreditation by the German Science Council
As the most important advisory body for science policy in Germany, the Science Council confirmed in 2008 that the FHDW, as a private university, provides teaching and research according to recognised scientific standards and has the necessary material, personnel and financial resources. Most recently, the FHDW was re-accredited for another five years in 2019, once again confirming that it meets the high quality requirements.
System accreditation according to the Accreditation Council by FIBAA
In system accreditation, the quality assurance system of a higher education institution is examined to determine whether it functions in such a way that the higher education institution can guarantee the quality of its study programmes.
The Foundation Accreditation Council is a joint institution of the Länder for quality assurance in teaching and learning at German higher education institutions. It commissions accreditation agencies for this task. At the FHDW, the accreditation agency FIBAA reviewed the quality assurance system according to the specifications of the Accreditation Council. For example, the teaching evaluation, the examination system and the management of teaching assistants were scrutinised. In December 2018, the FHDW successfully completed the system accreditation. The experts came to the conclusion that the university can be released into independence. This means that the FHDW will carry out programme accreditations itself in the future.
