Why do application deadlines exist?
Application deadlines at universities are used to make the application process more structured and efficient. There are various reasons why these deadlines are set:
Creating equal opportunities
By applying the same deadline to all applicants, it is ensured that everyone has a fair chance of admission. Adherence to the deadline prevents individual applicants from gaining an advantage over others.
Administrative effort
Due to the high number of applications, application deadlines allow universities to manage the application process efficiently. By setting a limited time period, they have enough time to carefully consider all applications.
Planning and organisation
Setting application deadlines helps universities to better plan and organise their study operations. They can estimate the number of places available and allocate appropriate resources to meet the needs of admitted students.
Coordinating with other institutions
Universities often need to coordinate their application deadlines with other institutions, such as scholarship providers or halls of residence. This is to ensure a smooth transition for admitted students.
Keep in mind that at the end of the day, application deadlines always depend on your chosen university. Visit your university's website or call to make sure you can still apply for the winter semester 2023/24. NC (Numerus Clausus) degree programmes
The general application deadline for NC degree programmes for the winter semester 2023/24 is the 15th of July 2023.
If you have missed this deadline: no problem! The enrolment deadline for the summer semester 2024 is the 15th January 2024, but please note that it is only possible to start your studies in the summer semester for a small number of degree programmes.
Which degree programmes have an NC?
For admission-restricted degree programmes with an NC, you only have the opportunity to be accepted if you can prove that you have very good grades. This is because the following degree programmes receive numerous applications each year:
- (Dental) Medicine,
- Psychology,
- Architecture
...and many other degree programmes have restricted admissions. So if you want to apply for a degree programme of this kind: better hurry! The application deadline is coming up soon, so if you're still flexible with your choice of study programme, you're sure to find the right course for you with our study finder.
NC-free degree programmes
In contrast to the admission-restricted degree programmes, the enrolment deadline for admission-free degree programmes is at least somewhat looser.
The application deadline for NC-free degree programmes for the winter semester 2023/24 is 31st of July 2023.
If you have missed this deadline: no problem! The enrolment deadline for the summer semester 2024 is 31st of January 2024, but please note that it is only possible to start your studies in the summer semester for a few degree programmes.
